De Engelse pianist, violist en componist David Shenton (1975) is een veelzijdig musicus die zich in zijn composities graag Chopin als voorbeeld kiest. Aan de vele bestaande muziekvormen voegde hij de ’oddity’ toe. Een muziekstuk met jazzinvloed en vol capricieuze gevoelens dat uitdagend is voor de uitvoerende, maar door zijn melodieusheid makkelijk toegankelijk voor de luisteraar. In de ‘Ballade’ kiest hij duidelijk het voorbeeld dat Chopin aan deze muziekvorm gaf.

De Pianosonate met de delen ’allegro’, ’scherzo’, ‘romanza’ en ‘rondo’ heeft een uitgesproken romantisch karakter naar negentiende eeuwse voorbeelden. Chopin, met ditmaal zijn Études, waren het voorbeeld van de Variaties over ‘Santa Claus is coming to town’ en brengen de luisteraar op een aparte manier in Kerstsfeer.

De componist zegt daarover: ‘I wanted to incorporate the basic elements of the 24 studies, maintaining the integrity of the patterns, the technical intentions, and as many of the original harmonies as possible while trying to weave in the melody of this great Christmas standard. The Studies by Chopin are generally less melody -driven than his other group compositions, such as the Preludes or Nocturnes, so in many ways, they are more adaptable to transcriptions, since one can play the studies with different harmonies, yet they will remain recognizable as the Chopin Etudes. The true challenge of playing this piece, aside from the obvious technical difficulties, is the realization that a pianist will have to ‘unlearn’ the original studies’.

Zo schreef hij muziek naar ieders smaak die door Joanne Polk heel mooi en zorgvuldig invult als ging het om een legpuzzel met vele mooie losse stukjes.
