LEIGHTON, KENNETH (1929 – 1988): ROMANTISCH SERIALISME

De Engelse componist Leighton studeerde in Oxford en bij Petrassi in Rome. In 1970 werd hij als professor benoemd aan de universiteit in Edinburgh. Zijn muziek is in de twaalftoons traditie maar heeft fundamentele diatonische trekken. Voor een romantische inslag zorgen expressieve lyrische melodiek, instrumentale kleuren en een virtuoze solostijl. Leighton schreef met name veel R.K. kerkmuziek, maar ook concerten, kamermuziek en pianowerken.
